Along with the neighboring village of Douglas, the hamlet was named one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Guardianship for Historic Preservation last year.

So it appeared that in addition to the showy-looking sand stretches, there was plenty to do to keep a family occupied in the Saugatuck square. Which was fortunate, because the day after we arrived for our four-day, mid-July vacation, it started to sprinkle and the temperatures plummeted to the low 60s.

But first, we hit the beach.

After a breezy, easy travel, we made it to our motel with little stress. Since Saugatuck has been a tourist stopping-place since the early 1900s, lodging choices are plentiful. In besides to several bed-and-breakfast options and inns in the center of downtown, midcentury motor lodges plan the Blue Star Highway, which leads into the area.

We chose the Pines Motor House , a 14-room 1940s-era motel that had been lovingly and chicly renovated in the last decade, like many of the motorway options.
